Safe & Simple at Home Cleaning Methods

For Diamonds and Durable Gemstones
Use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft brush. Clean your jewelry in a bowl of warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Dry your piece with a lint‐free cloth.

For Pearls and Delicate Gems
Softer gems can be scratched easily. Clean your pearls in warm, slightly soapy water, with a very soft brush. Rinse thoroughly and lay your pearls to dry on a towel or chamois. Since silk thread can stretch, it’s best to let the pearls sit until the strand is completely dry.

Ultrasonic Cleaners

While ultrasonic cleaners are great for cleaning metals, diamonds and certain gemstones, they should not be used on:

  • Organic gems (e.g., pearls, coral, ivory)
  • Fracture-filled stones (e.g., most emeralds)
  • Coated gems (e.g., Mystic Fire Topaz)
  • Heat-sensitive stones (e.g., opal, tanzanite, iolite)
  • Certain heat-treated gemstones

Jewelry Care Basics

Sunlight

Just like the sun damages skin, heat and light can damage certain gemstones. Amethyst and topaz may fade, opals can darken, and pearls may bleach or peel. To remove any doubt, store your jewelry in a dark pouch or a lined jewelry case.

Chemicals

Everyday substances like bleach, ammonia, hairspray, perfume, and lotion can damage metals and dull gemstones. To keep your jewelry looking new, always apply beauty products before putting on jewelry, and remove your pieces before cleaning or swimming.

Treated Gemstones

Many gemstones are treated to enhance their appearance and require special care. Treated gemstones may be negatively affected by heat, steam, ultrasonic cleaning, or certain solvents. Always follow care instructions specific to the treatment your stone has received.

Storing Your Fine Jewelry

Proper storage is essential to protect your fine jewelry from scratches and damage. Delicate pieces like pearls, diamonds, and gemstones should never be tossed into a drawer or box haphazardly.
